National Intern Day, Safran Data Systems, Inc.

Interview with Sam Spivey

1. Present Yourself!

My name is Sam Spivey, I currently go to Georgia Georgia Institute of Technology (Atlanta, GA) for my bachelor in Aerospace Engineering. I am currently Quality and Health, Safety and Environment (HSE) intern at Safran Data Systems, Inc. (Norcross, GA).

2. How did you hear about Safran’s internship program?

My mother goes to church with Leonard Ferron, who works at Safran Data Systems, and his wife and was curious about any internship opportunities. After a tour with Leonard at Safran Data Systems sometime later, I was eventually brought on as an intern.

3. What are your main responsibilities?

I am currently working under Howard Alter, Manager  of the Quality and HSE Department. Some of my responsibilities have included assisting him with presentations, tracking our KPIs, ensuring we have all the documentation for the chemicals we work with is in place, and performing internal audits.

4. What is something you have learned during your internship that you did not learn in the classroom?

I would say one thing would be the firsthand experience of just how important internal audits are. Ensuring and confirming that everything is up to par and regulation keeps us as a company productive and orderly.

5. What is one thing you enjoy the most about your internship?

It has all been very enjoyable, but I would say the general ability to see an aerospace company operate up-close has been an incredible learning opportunity and insightful experience. Nothing beats up close firsthand experience.

6. What is your advice to other interns looking to get the most of their experience?

Remember that it is all a learning opportunity. Don’t be afraid to ask any questions and always take the initiative to be as helpful and productive as you can. Try your best to talk to others outside of your department before you leave the internship to get the best scope of the industry as a whole as you possibly can. And also, have fun!
