Paris Air Show 2023: our Space solutions represented!

After a forced four-year gap, the International Paris Air Show returned this year and Safran was there for the 54th edition (June 19-25).

June 26, 2023

Bourget Air Show, Paris Air Show, Safran Data Systems, Inc.

The Biggest Aerospace Show of the World

The Paris Air Show is one of the biggest aeronautics show in the world, representing:

– 2,500 exhibitors from 46 countries, including 1,130 from France

– 300 Start-ups from 21 countries

– 125,000 sqm of exhibition space (halls + chalets + static)

– 150 aircraft

– Total of 400,000 entries over the week

This was an opportunity for Safran to emphasize its role as a key player in the aerospace industry to customers, partners and potential new employees alike. In addition to aeronautics, space was also an important part of our stand. Presenting our space capabilities under the same banner serves to establish Safran as a key global equipment supplier independent of space contractors.

Two Safran Data Systems products were presented:

Tracking Space Antennas, Earth Observation, Communication Satellites

ORION, Space Tracking Antenna

ORION is a large-diameter (7 to 20 m) tracking antenna for cutting-edge space applications such as tracking observation satellites, scientific missions such as future moon applications, or space vehicles. Born from Safran expertise in automation, mechanical engineering and radio frequencies, ORION is regularly selected by the most demanding customers such as NASA, JAXA or ground segment operators, who seek the best performance in space data reception across several frequency bands at the same time.

Data acquisition unit, HEIM, FTI

CMA, Data Acquisition Unit for Launch Vehicles

CMA is an airborne data acquisition system designed to transmit all launcher critical data to the ground, during the launch phase and throughout the mission. The ultra-compact CMA can perform a multitude of operations under extreme temperatures and in real time, such as sensor activation, signal and data acquisition transiting via bus connections or GNSS reception

The first mission named “Artemis I” is unmanned. The SLS rocket will carry the Orion Spacecraft, which will orbit the Moon.
Subsequent Artemis missions will bring astronauts back to the #Moon and send the first humans to Mars.

Safran Data Systems Inc has been supporting this program since 2010, being selected for equipment onboard the rocket as well as on the ground to collect the rocket #telemetry:

  • The onboard video imagery system utilizes our Heim MDR Series recorder, capturing, processing and telemetering video streams from cameras placed throughout the SLS rocket.
  • On the ground, NASA’s ground stations rely on multiple Safran’s equipment: SPARTE tracking antenna, Cortex Series telemetry receivers & RF recorders and Heim GMDR video processor delivering in real-time telemetered data and videos to NASA.

In other words, the display of rocket imagery is made possible thanks to Safran technologies allowing all Space enthusiasts to fully experience this historical moment.
