One year after the second edition in the U.S. (Huntsville, AL and then Palmdale, CA), Testing & Training in Motion came back last week for the third edition. On program: training and hands-on sessions, keynote speaker (Pax River only) with our experts from the US and Europe.

On March 28th, we welcomed our customers in Dowell, near to the Pax River Range, Maryland. We had the pleasure to welcome Dave Walsh, our keynote speaker, who shared his tremendous stories. Dave had a 40+ year career as a flight test engineer at Sikorsky Aircraft.  He retired in late 2021 and is currently working part time as a pilot.  For the last 10 years of his time at Sikorsky he was a senior Technical Fellow for flight test. More details here: Keynote Speaker TiM Pax River – Meet Dave Walsh! – Safran (safrandatasystemsus.com)

From East to West Coast, the team traveled on March 29th and set up everything in Fort Worth to be ready for the next day.

Agenda

Four training sessions were proposed – the occasion for our attendees CEUs (Continuing Education Units*)

  • IRIG 106 Chapter 7: Packet Telemetry Downlink-Understanding the Standard
  • Fiber Sensing
  • On-Board Processing: How and why processing is now mandatory in your FTI?
  • Range of the Future, how the range architecture is evolving
  • And one introduction to “Wireless instrumentation”

As well as 8 hands-on sessions during the day:

  • How to get rid of wires for your FTI?
  • Fiber Bragg Grating (FBG)
  • Distributed Instrumentation Systems, leveraging new technology in your system architecture
  • Cybersecurity features on the MDR-GTS
  • The RSR-RF-200, the Ultra-Wideband recorder that captures and reproduces your entire RF Telemetry spectrum
  • Best Source Selector to improve the Telemetry reception in Real-Time
  • OBP module – Multilateration processing

This event format reinforces Safran Data Systems’ image in the U.S. as a provider of effective, sustainable and innovative solutions. Another edition in 2024 is already scheduled.

David Walsh: His Background

Dave Walsh had a 40+ year career as a flight test engineer at Sikorsky Aircraft. He retired in late 2021 and is currently working part time as a pilot. For the last 10 years of his time at Sikorsky he was a senior Technical Fellow for flight test.

Dave earned a BS in Aerospace engineering from Syracuse University (1981), an MS in Mechanical engineering from Florida Atlantic University (1986) and an AS in Professional Pilot Technology from Indian River State College (2000).

He is a commercial pilot and flight instructor in both airplanes and helicopters. He and some friends built a Vans RV-7A homebuilt airplane which now has 1600+ hours on it and has flown all over the country.

David joined Sikorsky flight test in 1981 working in the handling qualities/flight controls group on H-60 (BlackHawk and SeaHawk) and S-76 development programs.

In 1984 he moved into the Chief of Flight Test (COFT) role leading teams that upgraded the performance of the CH-3E, the VH-3D and certified the S-76B. He and a small team of engineers developed the Cypher unmanned aircraft in the early 1990’s. He acted as chief of flight test for the development and certification of the S-92, managing 5 test aircraft and a team of more than 100 engineers, pilots and crew. The S-92 was the 1st helicopter certified to the latest Part 29 FAA regulations, including flight in known icing. David was then assigned as the COFT for the build, ground test and flight test of the X2 technology demonstrator. The very small X2 team was intimately involved in every aspect of the build and testing. The X2 achieved a level flight speed of 253 knots, an unofficial world speed record for a helicopter. Both the S-92 (2002) and X2 (2010) won the Collier Trophy for the greatest achievement in aeronautics or astronautics in America for that year.

In addition to these major programs, he has contributed to pretty much every product in the Sikorsky inventory.

The first mission named “Artemis I” is unmanned. The SLS rocket will carry the Orion Spacecraft, which will orbit the Moon.
Subsequent Artemis missions will bring astronauts back to the #Moon and send the first humans to Mars.

Safran Data Systems Inc has been supporting this program since 2010, being selected for equipment onboard the rocket as well as on the ground to collect the rocket #telemetry:

  • The onboard video imagery system utilizes our Heim MDR Series recorder, capturing, processing and telemetering video streams from cameras placed throughout the SLS rocket.
  • On the ground, NASA’s ground stations rely on multiple Safran’s equipment: SPARTE tracking antenna, Cortex Series telemetry receivers & RF recorders and Heim GMDR video processor delivering in real-time telemetered data and videos to NASA.

In other words, the display of rocket imagery is made possible thanks to Safran technologies allowing all Space enthusiasts to fully experience this historical moment.
