Revolutionizing Aerospace Connectivity

Viasat and Safran Data Systems have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to innovate with Viasat’s InRange rocket telemetry system and accelerate its use by launch providers and spaceports.

January 15, 2024

Viasat and Safran Data Systems, Inc. join forces to make the system commercially available and accelerate its adoption for launch providers and spaceports. InRange utilizes Viasat’s global L-band satellite fleet to provide real-time telemetry data for launch missions, eliminating ‘blackout zones.

Existing Terrestrial-Based Telemetry Solutions

To optimize the efficiency and reliability of our space mission monitoring, it is imperative to systematically address the limitations associated with ground-based site tracking.

A key objective in this endeavor is to eliminate the loss of real-time telemetry that occurs when spacecraft are beyond the line of sight of ground stations. This challenge necessitates the implementation of advanced communication strategies and technologies to ensure seamless data transmission even during periods of reduced visibility.

InRange's Solution Based on Satellite Tracking

To eliminate the loss of real-time telemetry that occurs when vehicles are beyond the line of sight of ground stations, the intent is to use  Viasat’s global L-band satellite fleet during the launch of the space vehicle. Thus, the real-time telemetry is sent directly to the satellite infrastructure without the need for ground communications infrastucture.

With this solution, the flight data is provided throughout all phases of the flight.

Solutions provided by Safran Data Systems

Under the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), Safran Data Systems will provide its telemetry antennas, onboard transmitters, and Cortex modems to support the InRange system for commercial launch systems virtually anywhere in the world.

Last November 2023, Safran Data Systems’ teams held a demonstration at our Norcross facility (Georgia) successfully transmitting a telemetry link to multiple locations around the globe (Hawaii, Cape Canaveral, New York England) using a Viasat satellite.
