Interview of Ryan Goldberg

We are happy to welcome Ryan Goldberg at Safran Data Systems, Inc. as Subject Matter Expert and Senior Engineer for RF and Ground Telemetry. Let’s know more about him!

February 6, 2024
Safran Data Systems, Inc - New Employees - RF Telemetry - HR

Present yourself.

Ryan Goldberg, I studied at the University of West Florida and received my Bachelor of Science degree in Physics.
I am currently the Subject Matter Expert and Senior Engineer for RF (Radio-Frequency) and Ground Telemetry at Safran Data Systems, Inc.

How did you hear about us? What are you doing at Safran Data Systems, Inc.?

I first heard about Safran Data Systems in 2015 when I was the Telemetry Engineer at Eglin Air Force Base. Safran won a contract to deliver 2 custom Telemetry Vans that I had designed.

Currently at Safran, I am helping the RF and Ground Telemetry team meet the customers’ needs through site surveys, product support, component and system V&V (Verification & Validation), FAT (Factory Acceptance Test) and OSAT (Onsite Acceptance Test) integration, and technical support to make sure our customers receive exactly what they need to complete their mission.

What inspired you to join the team here?

I have always been impressed with Safran’s innovative technology, quality products, excellent customer service, and the corporate culture is the best I have experienced.

Tell us about a professional success story that you are proud of.

A few years ago, I was working on a major test range, and one of our test facilities lost an item during testing.
It was a projectile that had taken an errant course, and the customer needed it to be recovered as soon as possible so the recorder data could be evaluated.
The team on site had spent almost 3 months performing grid searches by foot and had even given the video footage to the math lab so the computer programmers could run calculations on where this item might have landed.
Still not being able to locate the item; the Lead Engineer brought me the video footage, and within 2 days, some basic projectile motion physics, and critical thinking I was able to direct them to within 234 feet of the item. This was 10,000 feet closer than the computer simulations.

Revolutionizing Aerospace Connectivity

Viasat and Safran Data Systems have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to innovate with Viasat’s InRange rocket telemetry system and accelerate its use by launch providers and spaceports.

January 15, 2024

Viasat and Safran Data Systems, Inc. join forces to make the system commercially available and accelerate its adoption for launch providers and spaceports. InRange utilizes Viasat’s global L-band satellite fleet to provide real-time telemetry data for launch missions, eliminating ‘blackout zones.

Existing Terrestrial-Based Telemetry Solutions

To optimize the efficiency and reliability of our space mission monitoring, it is imperative to systematically address the limitations associated with ground-based site tracking.

A key objective in this endeavor is to eliminate the loss of real-time telemetry that occurs when spacecraft are beyond the line of sight of ground stations. This challenge necessitates the implementation of advanced communication strategies and technologies to ensure seamless data transmission even during periods of reduced visibility.

InRange's Solution Based on Satellite Tracking

To eliminate the loss of real-time telemetry that occurs when vehicles are beyond the line of sight of ground stations, the intent is to use  Viasat’s global L-band satellite fleet during the launch of the space vehicle. Thus, the real-time telemetry is sent directly to the satellite infrastructure without the need for ground communications infrastucture.

With this solution, the flight data is provided throughout all phases of the flight.

Solutions provided by Safran Data Systems

Under the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), Safran Data Systems will provide its telemetry antennas, onboard transmitters, and Cortex modems to support the InRange system for commercial launch systems virtually anywhere in the world.

Last November 2023, Safran Data Systems’ teams held a demonstration at our Norcross facility (Georgia) successfully transmitting a telemetry link to multiple locations around the globe (Hawaii, Cape Canaveral, New York England) using a Viasat satellite.

CORTEX RSR-RF, Digital Telemetry Recorder
Available in two versions

The CORTEX RSR-RF is a digital recorder that plays a crucial role in capturing and reproducing the RF analog signal received by the antenna before any processing takes place.

It serves as a vital component in a Telemetry Station, ensuring the highest availability of critical data, especially in cases where on-board recording is not possible. The data collected during a flight can be thoroughly analyzed offline, providing the flexibility to fine-tune various settings in the receiver or decommutator, optimizing the extraction of every bit of the recorded signal. This in-flight data offers extensive post-processing flexibility.

You can adjust various settings in the receiver, the bit synchronizer, and the decommutator to maximize data extraction, a capability achievable only through RF recording. Additionally, it proves to be an invaluable tool for test range qualification before significant flights.

The RSR-RF is available in 2 versions:

RSR-RF-40

RSR-RF-200
