Revolutionizing telemetry with multi-location ground stations centrally controlled

Safran has developed a centrally controlled multiple antennas systems which overcomes the limitations of single-receiving antennas when extending a data reception area.

May 9, 2024
Safran Data Systems, Inc., Safran USA, Aerospace

Answering existing challenges

The use of a single receiving antenna poses several challenges to flight test. The antenna needs to be located on a high spot for maximum visibility of the test article. Moreover, flights at lower altitudes and uneven terrains limit the achievable visibility (line-of-sight) between the test article and the receiving antenna.

During the tests, articles might be maneuvered in such a way that the transmitting antenna is not in direct view of the receiving site. Some techniques exist to address this limitation by using multiple transmitting antennas on the test article, but they have limitations.

Become the maestro of your station

Safran’s TM Maestro uses multiple receiving antennas to extend the usable area for flight tests, optimizing data reception even when the aircraft is positioned behind obstacles. The main station can be located anywhere, with remote stations connected to it, facilitating efficient coordination between several ground stations.

For optimum management of telemetry streams from multiple sources, Safran takes advantage of the DQE/DQM specification introduced by IRIG-106. Having implemented this specification enables the Best Source Selector (BSS) to access reception quality information from each receiver and select the best data stream. The BSS also aligns incoming streams over time to switch seamlessly between them.

Automation of the management and control of multiple antennas becomes mandatory, and Safran offers a fully integrated solution so a single operator can monitor and control all his antennas from a centralized location. This solution, communicating via Ethernet, also simplifies the management of other system equipment.

Accurate position acquisition from multiple sources remains crucial to track the test article. Safran has developed an alternative way using the ADS-B system used by any commercial aircraft for air traffic control, in which the aircraft continuously sends its actual position. Telemetry stations can therefore easily ensure tracking, and reception of the telemetry streams, over the greatest possible distance.

Safran’ approach to improve telemetry quality and efficiency through centrally controlled multiple-receiving antennas and management systems underscores its commitment to provide the most advanced scalable solutions.

Present yourself.

My name is Paul Starck. I am a US Marine Corps Veteran currently serving as the Business Development Director for Aerospace Instrumentation and Mission Systems at Safran Data Systems, Inc.

How did you hear about us?

My experience with Safran began in 2009, initially as an end user and integrator of your products.

I faced the intricate challenge of the merger between the Army’s Aviation Technical Test Center (ATTC) and Redstone Technical Test Center (RTTC) into what would become the new Redstone Test Center (RTC).

As a Principal Hardware Engineer with a background in constructing Data Centers and Flight Simulators, I was assigned the exciting responsibility of designing, building out, and testing the new Flight Test Control Center (FTCC)—all within a tight deadline.

Under the tutelage of the Instrumentation Division’s TM team, I learned extensively about Safran’s telemetry equipment, from antennas to receivers, enabling me to integrate these technologies into a seamlessly functioning system.

This project marked the beginning of my journey; since then, I’ve had the privilege of designing and outfitting numerous Control Rooms and Hardware-in-the-Loop labs across the Eastern US, each utilizing a variety of instrumentation for aviation systems testing.

What are you doing at Safran Data Systems, Inc.?

In my role as Business Development Director, I focus on bridging connections and forging strong partnerships.

I work closely with our Sales Managers to ensure that Safran meets the needs of the organizations we serve, with a particular emphasis on developing telemetry ground solutions.

My responsibilities extend beyond just spreading the word about our products; I am actively involved in developing, implementing, and evaluating our business development plans that include a strategic focus on telemetry systems. This work is vital as we initiate and manage business partnerships and alliances.

Additionally, I take great pride in managing key client relationships and tirelessly work to cultivate new ones. Together with the Sales team, we strive to understand each customer’s specific requirements and deliver comprehensive, tailored solutions that go beyond mere transactions to foster enduring relationships.

This includes ensuring that our telemetry offerings meet the sophisticated demands of today’s markets.

What inspired you to join the team here?

Throughout my years of using Safran’s products, I was continuously impressed by their unwavering dedication to customer service—it truly stood out from the rest.

So, when the opportunity arose to join this team, thanks to a nudge from Ryan Goldberg, I jumped at the chance. It’s thrilling to be part of a team that values customer success as much as I do.

Tell us about a professional success story that you are proud of.

I’ve learned that beyond all the technical skills, the true backbone of success is integrity and authenticity. These aren’t just values; they’re the currency of trust and the foundation for genuine, effective relationships in any professional setting.
